Choosing a right industrial training company to attend was a very difficult decision to make. Yet what made me select Sarawak Biodiversity Centre over other institutions is mainly their focus on the discoveries of biological resources that would bring to the development of pharmaceutical drugs, nutraceutical and also herbal therapies. As a Resource Biotechnology student at the UNIMAS, I was delighted to be selected as one of the SBC’s industrial trainee.
Throughout the training programme, I had the opportunity to be placed in different laboratories such as Plant Preparation lab, Extraction lab and Analytical Chemistry lab to practice the skills acquired from my university studies. My industrial training with SBC gave me a great hands-on experience to develop valuable lab skills. I was given the opportunity to collaborate with their research teams, while also working independently in this comfortable and systematic lab environment.
I have been taught and learned a lots of new things under the expertise of their researches including organic extraction of aromatic, non-aromatic plants, hydrodistillation of essential oils, and fractionation of useful bioactive compounds using open column chromatography. These skills that I learnt here could be very useful and beneficial for my future career.
This industrial training is an eye-opening, must have experience. Lastly, I would like to thank the SBC for giving me the chance to experience this great training programme that lasts for 12 weeks. Also, thank you to all the staff in SBC that giving me such a friendly and warmly environment to work with.
