I am very grateful that the Sarawak Biodiversity Centre (SBC) has given me the opportunity to carry out my Industrial Training in such a great place. I am currently studying for a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biotechnology Resource from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak and will be graduating soon.
It has been a great experience to be attached to SBC’s Molecular Biology laboratory, given the new skills, knowledge and techniques that I have picked up through a very hands-on experience in experimentation.
I am currently carrying out anticancer compound screening with extracts/samples of indigenous plants in Sarawak. I strongly believe that Sarawak is a state that is enormously rich in plant diversity and poses a huge potential in obtaining useful compounds in killing or targeting cancer cells.
SBC has the essential equipment in accomplishing this project and has in place, the Traditional Knowledge (TK) Documentation Programme with the communities in the state that makes this project a lot easier and quicker.
Overall, I can assure that all the working experiences gained in SBC so far were totally worth it. It prepares me for my next level of education and has equipped me with the knowledge in current advancement of science.
