We welcomed a delegation from Jawatankuasa Penasihat kepada Pihak Berkuasa Kompeten Kebangsaan (JPCNA) led by its Chairman, YBhg Dato’ Sri Dr. Hj. Abd. Rahman bin Hj. Abd Rahim.
Among other members present was YBhg Dato’ Fakhrul Hatta bin Musa, Deputy Director General (Conservation), Department of Wildlife and National Parks Peninsular Malaysia (PERHILITAN). YBhg Dato’ Mohd Rahim bin Rani, Deputy Director General of Forestry (Operations and Technical), YBrs Dr Nik Musa’Adah Mustapha, Senior Research Officer, Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM), Mr Arief Iskandar bin Mohamad, Principal Assistant Secretary and Mdm Nur Farahin bin Masran, Assistant Secretary, Division of Biodiversity Management, Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (KeTSA).
The delegates include Pihak Berkuasa Kompeten Kebangsaan (NCA) which comprises Bahagian Perancang Ekonomi Pahang, Majlis Biodiversiti Pahang, Jabatan Perhutanan Negeri Sembilan, Bahagian Perancang Ekonomi Kedah, Bahagian Perancang Ekonomi Pulau Pinang, Kementerian Alam Sekitar dan Air (KASA), & Kementerian Sains, Teknologi dan Innovasi (MOSTI). Also present to welcome the delegates was Ms Tang Hung Huong, Head of Division, Biodiversity and Environment Division, Ministry of Natural Resources and Urban Development (MUDeNR).
The role of JPNCA and NCA is as coordinator of the implementation of Act 795 Access to Biological Resources and Benefit Sharing at the federal level and as National Focal Point to various conventions involving access to biological resources and benefit sharing. JPNCA was appointed by the Secretary General of KeTSA to advise the NCA on scientific, legal, technical, ethical and other disciplinary matters. They were in SBC to learn and gain in-depth knowledge on the implementation on Access to Biological Resources and Access and Benefit Sharing.
Mr Fathely bin Bily, Head of Section, Intelligence, Investigation & Prosecution and Mr Willy Chin Siaw Min, Head of Section, TPA Protection of Sarawak Forestry Corporation presented a briefing on Wildlife Protection Ordinance 1998 and National Parks & Nature Reserves Ordinance to the delegates.
Dato’ Sri Abd Rahman shared, “We have learned a lot from the visit today especially how ABS could bring benefits to the indigenous communities and SBC’s effort in creating awareness on biopiracy”.
The delegates also visited the Semenggoh Wildlife Centre to experience an up-close the feeding of Orang Utan and learned its conservation works at the Centre.
