It has been such a great experience throughout my Industrial training here at Sarawak Biodiversity Centre (SBC). When comes to meet many super-friendly and easy going people around SBC make me feel more welcome and comfortable in this working place. I am really grateful for having this opportunity of being part of them and together help the Earth keeping the biodiversity for a better tomorrow as mention in their tagline.
I am currently a student of Degree in Bachelor of Animal Resource Science in University Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) and I was assigned to work in Traditional Knowledge Documentation. During my first month, I was given a task on inventory work in the nurseries which involve updating plant lists and change new plant tagging. I was not really exposed to animal-relating work but I took this as a new experience and knowledge for me to work with plants instead of animals. Besides, I also learnt to prepare the herbarium specimen collected from the communities which are kept for future.
Throughout my training, I also gained a great new experience to work with camera trappings that were installed in SBC’s jungle trail. It was exciting to discover a few number of small mammals existed in SBC jungle as well as to see how it operates and install. Working in the field is tiring but exciting at the same time because it is my passion to go into the jungle and explore the nature.
I conclude everything with a high gratitude to all SBC’s staff for having me here and giving me such unforgettable experiences and opportunity. I have gained some new knowledge within these 12 weeks as a industrial student. This training has opened my eyes to see the future of the real working environment and also the importance of maintaining biodiversity to the communities and to us.
