Endemic Inland Fishes Of Borneo Web

The Sarawak Biodiversity Centre (SBC)  invites enthusiasts of biodiversity to a webinar to explore the inland fishes of Borneo, with a particular emphasis on peat swamp and hill stream habitats. The webinar  by Dr Tan Heok Hui will be held at 10.00am on 15th August 2024.

Currently, more than 350 endemic fish species have been documented from Borneo, with an endemism rate of approximately 50%. The majority of these species originate from three families: Cyprinidae (around 100 species),  Gastromyzontidae (around 60 species), and Osphronemidae (around 50 species). The webinar will also cover some conservation issues related to these species.

The distinguished speaker, Dr. Tan is Curator of Fishes with the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum, National University of Singapore.  He obtained his Bachelor’s degree with Honours from the National University of Singapore in 1995, a Master’s of Science degree in 1998, and a Doctoral degree in 2003, all from the same institution.

His research work includes the taxonomy of fighting fishes (genus Betta), a faunistic survey of the Batang Hari basin in Central Sumatra, and the systematics of Gastromyzon of Borneo.

His research portfolio also includes the conservation and ecology of fish within Singapore, including mangrove and coastal fishes. Dr. Tan specializes in the taxonomy of freshwater fishes of Southeast Asia and has described more than 130 fish species to date, with over 120 publications.

Purdue University Expert to speak on Yeast Metabolic Engineering for Sustainable Production of Food Ingredients and Value-Added Products

Expired

OhEunJoongPublic Web

Dr. Eun Joong Oh, Assistant Professor in the Department of Food Science at Purdue University, is set to present a public awareness talk entitled “Yeast Metabolic Engineering for Sustainable Production of Food Ingredients and Value-Added Products” on 24th July 2024 (Wednesday), 10:30 am under the Sarawak Biodiversity Centre’s (SBC) series of public talks.

Dr. Oh's groundbreaking research focuses on the biotechnological production of food ingredients and value-added chemicals using engineered yeast strains. His work addresses the critical challenges facing current industrial fermentation processes, such as high feedstock costs and low productivity, by employing advanced metabolic engineering techniques to enhance cellular activity.

In his talk, Dr. Oh will outline how rational and combinatorial approaches can be used to develop engineered yeast strains capable of rapid and efficient fermentation of abundant sugars from non-food plant biomass. This innovation could significantly impact the sustainable production of biofuels and other value-added products.

The talk will take place at SBC’s Integrated Biodiversity Research Building (IBRB) located at Jalan Borneo Heights, Semengoh. Join us and register for free via https://shorturl.at/j3o5h (Physical attendance) or alternatively those interested can stream the live webinar on SBC’s official Facebook page at www.facebook.com./sarawak.biodiversity.centre and via zoom at https://bit.ly/SBC-Public-Talk

Attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about the future of biotechnology and its potential to create sustainable solutions for industrial challenges.  For more information, those interested can email This email address is being protected from spambots. A Tribute to Tun Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud

Expired

On 18th November 1997, under the visionary leadership of Tun Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud, the Sarawak Biodiversity Centre Bill, 1997 was tabled and passed by the State Legislative Assembly.  This was a pivotal moment for Sarawak, and also marked a first for Malaysia where a legislation was enacted to safeguard biodiversity.

Tun Pehin Sri's vision for the Sarawak Biodiversity Centre (SBC) was extraordinary - a centre that is equipped with state-of-the-art R&D facilities, and internationally recognised to safeguard Sarawak’s wealth of biodiversity whilst ensuring its utilisation in a sustainable manner, for the benefit of the people of Sarawak, Malaysia and the international community.

As a testament to his unwavering support for research, Tun Pehin Sri inaugurated SBC’s Research and Development Laboratories, back on 29th August 2006.  These included the molecular biology, microbiology, plant tissue culture, analytical chemistry, and bioinformatics laboratories.  On 13th December 2010, Tun Pehin Sri unveiled SBC’s new Administrative Building and supporting facilities, further enhancing our operational capabilities.

As we reflect on Tun Pehin Sri's invaluable contributions to conservation and sustainable development of biodiversity in Sarawak, we at SBC mourn his passing and extend our deepest condolences to his family.

Al-fatihah. May his soul be blessed and placed among the righteous.

The webinar is held in conjunction with International Day for Biological Diversity which falls on 22nd May. The theme for this year is “Building a shared future for all life”.

J Caira2Dr. Caira is a parasitologist whose work is on global scale and has led to the discovery of more than 200 new species and 30 new genera, the reconfiguration of tapeworm ordinal-level relationships using both morphological and molecular approaches. She has published more than 160 papers, books, and monographs. Dr Caira’s six-year study on Borneo’s sharks and stingrays was funded by the National Science Foundation, US.

Interesting Facts about Medicine in Nature

Biodiversity plays a vital role in maintaining human health. Many modern drugs and supplements have been derived from a wide variety of plants, animals and microorganisms in the biodiversity. These are the four organisms found to have contributed in the medical field. Are you able to tell their uses in improvement of human health?

1. Microorganism: Streptomyces griseus

Streptomyces griseus is a bacterium under the genus of Streptomyces. It is commonly  found in soil. Streptomycin, the first antibiotic cure for tuberculosis (TB), comes from strains of S. griseus.

2. Animal: Conus magus

Conus magus is also known as a cone snail. It is a marine species which uses its venom to protect against predators. Ziconotide, a chemical derived from the venom of C. magus, acts as a painkiller with 1000 times more potent than morphine.

3. Plant: Catharanthus roseus

Catharanthus roseus also known as Rosy Periwinkle. Vinblastine and Vincristine, chemotherapy medications used to treat several types of cancers (leukemia, lung cancer, bladder cancer and brain cancer), were originally obtained from this plant. This plant is endangered in the wild but widely cultivated in India, Europe, China and America.
