R&D to Product Development

From Biodiversity Discovery to Sustainable Bio-Innovation

Sarawak is home to one of the most diverse ecosystems on Earth. Our mission is to transform this biological wealth into high-value, standardised products that benefit global health and local communities.

The R&D to Product Development Pipeline

Our workflow is a multi-disciplinary journey that ensures every product is scientifically validated, ethically sourced, and commercially viable.

Indigenous Knowledge & Bioprospecting

Everything begins with Bioprospecting. We partner with indigenous communties of Sarawak and document their traditional knowledge through ethnobiological research to identify biological resources with unique properties.

  • Natural Product Library: We maintain a massive repository of natural product extracts and specialised microbes.

  • Screening: Our scientists conduct high-throughput screening to identify bioactive compounds with potential for anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, or specialised therapeutic applications.

Advanced Analysis and Molecular Research

Once a lead is identified, our Molecular Biology and Analytical Chemistry labs take over.

  • Precision Profiling: Utilising technologies like Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GCMS), we map the chemical structure of compounds to ensure high purity and efficacy.

  • Genetic Sequencing: We utilise molecular tools to understand the genetic makeup of microbes and plants, ensuring we can reproduce active ingredients consistently.

Formulation and Standardisation

In the Product Development Lab, raw science is turned into consumer-ready formulations.

  • Stability Testing: We test how extracts react in different environments to ensure a long shelf life and consistent performance.

  • Specialised Development: This includes creating standardised herbal extracts, essential oil blends, and topical treatments for specialised skin conditions or healthcare needs.

Sustainable Supply and Scalable Production

At SBC, scalability is achieved through a model that balances industrial standards with community-led conservation. We ensure that as a product grows in market demand, its supply remains stable, ethical, and environmentally restorative.

Our supply chain is built on the foundation of Good Wild Craft Practices (GWCP). This ensures that the collection of biological resources from the wild is done systematically and sustainably.

Standardised Harvesting:

We implement strict GWCP guidelines to ensure that only specific parts of the plants are harvested at the right time, allowing the mother plants to thrive and regenerate.

Quality Control at Source:

By following GWCP, we ensure that the raw materials supplied are free from contamination and maintain high levels of bioactive compounds right from the forest floor.

Community-Led Supply:

These practices are carried out by the indigenous communities who have shared their traditional knowledge. They are the primary guardians and suppliers of the raw materials, ensuring that the economic benefits of conservation stay with them.
