Sarawak’s diverse ecosystems contain a vast and largely unexplored variety of microalgae species.
SBC researchers have collected and isolated strains from environments across the state, including:
- Highland forests
- Mangrove ecosystems
- Rivers and freshwater streams
- Hot spring areas
- Coastal waters and open sea
- Wetlands, ponds and treatment systems
Each strain carries unique characteristics that may support applications in energy, food, agriculture, and environmental sustainability.
These discoveries form the foundation of SBC’s growing microalgae strain library, a valuable biological resource supporting both scientific research and industry development.
