Sarawak Biodiversity Centre Marks a Momentous 25 Years of Innovation and Discovery

Kuching, Sarawak, November 14, 2023 — The Sarawak Biodiversity Centre (SBC) celebrated a significant milestone, its 25th anniversary, with an elegant event here at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) today. The grand occasion was graced by the presence of the Honourable Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, who represented the Right Honourable Premier of Sarawak.
Chief Executive Officer of Sarawak Biodiversity Centre, Dato Dr Yeo Tiong Chia, welcomed the guests with a heartwarming speech, expressing gratitude to government officials and acknowledging the organization's growth over the past 25 years. He also highlighted the centre’s achievements such as the Natural Product Library and AI-assisted chemical database, as well as recognising the contributions of funders, staff and communities.
Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg congratulated SBC on its 25th anniversary, highlighting the centre’s transformative journey, achievements, and contributions in his speech read by Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn. In his speech, he also emphasized on the importance of traditional knowledge, and outlining initiatives to commercialize discoveries, drive the green economy, and advance technology adoption in biodiversity research.
The celebration began with the symbolic moment of cutting the anniversary cake, signifying the 25-year legacy of SBC. A poignant video acted by the scientists and staff of SBC, was presented on the night to commemorate the journey of SBC, capturing the Centre's contributions to discovery and innovation in biodiversity. Additionally, a special 25th Year Anniversary Book was unveiled, encapsulating the Centre's remarkable evolution over the years, showcasing how SBC bridges traditional knowledge with science, promoting access and benefit sharing with communities, and its continuous effort in digital transformation as well as adoption of blockchain technology.
Recognizing excellence and commitment, outstanding staff members were honoured through the presentation of awards, acknowledging their significant contributions to SBC's success. The night continued with captivating entertainment, providing a fitting tribute to the dedication and achievements of SBC over the past 25 years.
