The Sarawak Biodiversity Centre (SBC), in partnership with the Forest Department Sarawak, planted 762 saplings at the Sabal Forest Reserve on 21st August 2025 as part of its annual Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) tree planting programme.
The saplings included valuable indigenous timber species such as Belian, Selangan Batu Pinang, and Luis Kerangas, planted by 78 participants comprising staff from SBC and FDS, as well as SBC interns. They were joined by SBC CEO, Dato Dr Yeo Tiong Chia and BioVerde Technologies Sdn Bhd CEO, Hazwan Razak.
The initiative builds on Sarawak’s reforestation momentum, following the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, planting the 50 millionth tree in July, surpassing the State’s initial 35 million target.
SBC began its tree planting efforts in 2016 with 500 mangroves at Kuching Wetlands National Park (KWNP). Since expanding to Sabal in 2023, SBC has successfully planted over 3,500 trees at the reserve.
“This programme is about more than numbers. It is about creating a living legacy that will benefit both people and wildlife for generations to come and strengthening our own commitment to environmental stewardship through meaningful actions,” SBC said in a statement.
SBC thanked the Forest Department Sarawak for their collaboration and support in ensuring the success of this year’s tree planting event.
