Biodiversity Centre to Hold Public Awareness Talk on Palm Diversity in Borneo

Did you know that the greatest diversity of Licuala is found in New Guinea, Borneo and Peninsular Malaysia? The genus Licuala or more commonly known as palms, thrive in tropical areas such as Borneo where there is a good amount of rainfall, shade and partial shades from other larger trees.

The Sarawak Biodiversity Centre will be organizing a talk entitled "Species diversification of Licuala in Borneo" which will provide an overview of the 46 species of such palms found in Borneo. The talk will be presented by Dr Saw Leng Guan.

Dr Saw who is an editor of the “Tree Flora of Sarawak and Sabah” series is a known botanist whose areas of expertise are Licuala, systematic botany, herbarium curation, Malaysian forest ecology and development of botanic gardens.

Dr Saw currently heads the Forest Biodiversity Division of FRIM (Forest Research Institute Malaysia) will also highlight new, endemic and threatened species of Licuala in Borneo in his talk.

He has 30 years of experience in the field and is also an editor of other well known publications such as Sandakania and the Flora Maleisana series.

This talk will take place on 10 February 2012 (Friday) at 3pm at Sarawak Biodiversity Centre’s Lecture Theatre, KM20, Jalan Borneo Heights, Semengoh, Kuching.

Members of the public are invited to attend this talk which promises to be interesting and informative, and is aimed at creating awareness towards the value of Sarawak’s local biodiversity.

There are no entry charges/fees for the talk.
