The microbial world represents one of the largest untapped genetic resources in biodiversity which produce biologically and chemically unique yet diverse lead compounds for drug discoveries. Sarawak, known for its rich flora and fauna, is anticipated too to have a rich microbial diversity.
Actinomycetes and fungi strains are isolated from plant and soil samples collected from the natural ecosystem. An expanding collection of microbial cultures including many new and unique isolates produces an impressive array of natural product for discovery screening.
SBC's in-house screening showed that a variety of extracts from these strains exhibit specific and broad spectrum activity against important pathogens making the extracts ideal as starting points for discovery of new antibiotics.
